May the force be with you …(spoiler)
Star Wars is probably one of the most popular films
ever. The last to be released was on Wednesday, December 13 in France, titled The
Last Jedi. So let us return to the myth that Star Wars is.
It all began in 1977 with the original Star Wars trilogy, which
has known a tremendous success worldwide, to the surprise of all, as well as
the director first. In 2015, the sequel trilogy began with episode VII: The
Force Awakens, and then episode 8 takes place.
The 8th episode has been written and
directed by Rian Johnson. The film is produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion
Pictures. The film marks the final performance of
Carrie Fisher (playing princess Leia Organa), who tragically died in December
2016 from a heart attack. The film is dedicated to her memory - "to our
beloved princess". Indeed, we can perceive it when General Leia Organa and
Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) say farewell:
“Sure you can” Holdo responds, gently, “You taught me how.”
This last sentence can be read as an homage to Carrie Fisher.
The film received highly positive reviews, with praise for its plot,
ensemble cast, action scenes, visual effects, musical score and emotional
weight. It is the longest film of the series with 2h33min of suspense and
emotions. The film is well balanced between humor and tragedy; therefore, it
can be one of the most appreciate episodes of the series.
By the time, J.J.Abrams will have to imagine the story without Princess
Leia. Indeed he is the director of episode XIX, which will first be released in
the US on December 20, 2019, and still has no name. Now that we know Princess
Leia is alive at the end of The Last Jedi, he will have to choose
whether to replace the actress or whether he will stage the death of her
character at the beginning of the film. But unlike rumors broadcast on the net,
princess Leia will not return in episode 9 artificially, as the studio said
last January.
At this moment we don’t know what will be chosen. The team promised to
offer a "respectful" story to Leia, but never made it clear that
Carrie Fisher would not be replaced. The original idea of Disney / Lucasfilm
was to make Star Wars VII "Han's movie", Star Wars VIII "Luke's
movie" and Star Wars XIX "Leia's movie". It's hard to conceive
now that the actress is no longer with us, but officially, this idea has not
been totally abandoned.
In November 2017, Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson, the writer/director of The Last Jedi, will imagine a brand new
trilogy. The films will reportedly differ from the Skywalker-focused films in
favor of focusing on new characters. He wants to change direction, as he said
last October: “we must go to the new, and that's our responsibility (...) We
work in dream worlds, but we can not just be satisfied with that, we have to go
elsewhere. "
We'll see what Star Wars holds for the future, but in any case we are
sure not to be disappointed, given the talent with which every director manages
to seduce us with.
